TOP 5 DESIGN ISSUES WITH NEW FORMULA 1 CARS

Imagine last year's Formula 1 champion, McLaren-Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, saying this at any point in the '08 season: "In terms of true pace at the moment I don't think we are quick enough". We'd have laughed him off, either believing Lewis to be feigning modesty or mocking the truly slow teams. Teams like Honda (now Brawn F1) or Williams or Toyota; the very teams that were quickest in the first practice sessions preceding the first Formula 1 race of the new season.

Yes, the rules have changed. And with new rules come new cars. And with new cars comes completely new design. New designs often lead to criticism. Let's get one thing straight: Formula 1 cars are not designed to be pretty.... anymore. There was a time where F1 cars were free of sponsor stickers; which helped. But knowledge gained from wind tunnels has made these cars wickedly fast. Material science has helped with lighter materials, a contributing factor to the wicked fastness. All in all, inside last year's car, Lewis Hamilton didn't look quite as good as Jim Clark in a late 60s Lotus F1. Okay, in last year's McLaren-Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton didn't look half as good as Jim Clark in any Lotus F1 car.
Moving on, one must wonder what the major aesthetic displeasures with the new cars actually are? In true GoodCarBadCar.net fashion, here are The Good Car Guy's Top 5 Design Issues With New Formula 1 Cars.

#5 - REAR-END CARICATURE FORMING: The race car heads toward the camera.... then shoots away from the camera. Looking at the back of the car with its tall but narrow wing, each and every Formula 1 racer looks like an open-wheel race car caricature. Am I watching Disney F1?
#4 - TIRE-TO-BODY PROPORTIONS: Did they get these wheels from a Fort McMurray dump truck? Seriously, the car looks so narrow and low compared with the tire height. That seemed okay in the 60s. Apparently now it looks odd.
#3 - CAMERA STILLS & SLICK TIRES: You won't notice so much when watching on television or the internet, but a still-shot of any car with its slick tires (formerly grooved) make the tires look.... fake. This isn't a huge problem, but it does add to the cartoonish #5 issue.
#2 - DRIVERS LOOK LIKE KART RACERS: Add up all the other design issues, and the cars seem tiny and tinny. That makes these uber wealthy F1 drivers who swim in sponsorship deals up to their eyeballs appear as though they're driving go-karts at the local amusement park.
#1 - FUNNY-LOOKING BUT GOOD: The biggest personal issue The Good Car Guy can find is that all of these bad things equate to something very good. Notice how 80s looks are back in? Tights and leggings, ugly carpet, excessive wallpapering, snug hoodies, and now F1 cars. Well, typically The Good Car Guy hates the decade of his birth, but these new Formula 1 cars herald a sea change in attitude. Retro F1 is kind of cool. Rock on, 1983.

Representing a generation of first-time new car buyers, The Good Car Guy puts words to their thoughts and feelings. The Good Car Guy is a guy all about the good car. Advance the good car - dethrone the bad car.
