Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21,1940 - December 4, 1993) was an American composer, guitarist, singer and satirist. In his 35-year musical career, Zappa proved to be one of the most prolific musician-composers of his era, releasing over 75 albums during his lifetime, almost all of which consisted of original compositions. An obsessive recordist, later albums were often recorded live on portable 24 track tape machines. ‘The Man From Utopia’, ‘Broadway the Hard Way’ and ‘Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch’ are all examples of this ‘live’ take on the studio album. If you want to stage a festival honoring Frank Zappa - you might have to reckon with the Zappa Trust, headed up by Frank Zappa's widow, Gail. The German music festival Zappanale, bills itself as "the biggest Zappa festival in the world." It takes place in the German town of Bad Doberan every year. This week in a Düsseldorf court house Zappanale faced off against the Zappa Family Trust. The case is mainly about trademark rights/copyright of songs and products ... including the famous Zappa moustache. Zappanale claims that Frank Zappa himself gave his consent to the festival in a meeting in Amsterdam in ... Read Full Story

Fifteen years after his death, Frank Zappa is undergoing a renaissance. Son Dweezil and band are touring the nation as Zappa Plays Zappa , and Zappa’s rock opera “Joe’s Garage” is receiving its stage premiere , a mere 29 years after the albums’ release. Yes, albums. Act 1 was released as a single LP, shortly followed by Acts 2 and 3 in a two-record set. I bought both (or all) of them when they came out in 1979, for what felt at the time like a healthy chunk of change for a guy still in high school. I haven’t listened to them in years; ... Above: 'Songs of Praise' live at the safehouse church today. Best played loud on Sundays and other holy shopping days, the summer solstice, fake anarchist meetings, michael jackson's funeral (much as we love him) etc etc• This inspirational holy hymn is not by Saint Frank Zappa, although obviously influenced by him. It is by Steve Vai who played with Zappa and is on his Flex-Able Leftovers album. Zappa never did acid and only smoked ten joints...

But for Zappa fans, the novelty tunes are not the crux of the Zappa musical biscuit. Rather, it's the knotty, complex songs and instrumentals that keep them studying the recordings. Before and since Zappa's death in 1993, there have been many tribute ...

I guess it reminds me a little bit of what any experimental musician goes through when confronted with a very traditional crowd. Via Oddmusic Group. [...]
