There are two famous Fred Phelps right now. One of a religious church leader, the other is Olympian Michael Phelps' Father.
Michael Phelps is an American swimmer who won 8 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics. Michael often refered to his mom and sisters, but never spoke of his estranged dad. Fred Phelps left the family when Michael was stil a young boy, and eventually divorced Michael's mom Debbie when Michael was 9 years old.
Then there is the religious Fred Phelps. According to Wikipedia.org: Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr. is the pastor and leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, an independent Baptist church in Topeka, Kansas that is listed as a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center. He is known for preaching that " God hates fags " and that God will punish homosexuals as well as people such as Bill O'Reilly and Howard Dean, whom his church considers "fag-enablers".

I suppose as a parent my eyes and my heart last week were drawn toward eight-gold-medal Olympian Michael Phelps‘ mother, Debbie. She watched, as best as she could, every stroke of her son’s powerful 6’ 7” wing span cutting through the bright blue water, and every passing tic of the clock reading out one record breaking time after another.
