Why should we believe in God? Because God said so? What if God doesn't exist? What shall we believe in then?

This is a place to promote the vision of a humanist society. A society that places the value of all human life as the central value and concern, higher than money or institutions. A society that promotes non-violence as the only way to achieve results, fighting discrimination in all its forms; racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, etc. A society that encourages the continuous development and free distribution of human knowledge and allows freedom of beliefs and ideas

Welcome to the 34th edition of The Humanist Symposium! It is time to replenish your sense of awe, restore your confidence in humanity, and above all else, promote humanism as a viable alternative to superstition and delusion. That's right, the reality-based community has much to offer and this is a great forum for sharing some of it. Beyond Atheism Let me say at the outset that I love the idea of promoting atheism. It is something I try to to regularly here at Atheist Revolution . The trouble is, those of us who understand the meaning of atheism (i.e., the lack of theistic belief) ... Read Full Story

Image by clemente via Flickr It has been clear to me for some time that we need a secular community , and I am happy to see others making similar arguments . I have called on my fellow atheist bloggers to begin the task of cataloging options for uniting nonbelievers . I think it is time to again pick up this task and move forward in building community among atheists. This post will serve as a reorientation to the task and attempt to outline some characteristics of the sort of community I think we need. My goal here is not to persuade but to ... Read Full Story

Image by jmtimages via Flickr President Obama's mention of nonbelievers in his inaugural address did not go without notice by the media. Bloc Raisonneur did a great job of cataloging the initial reactions for us. Not surprisingly, the atheist blogosphere has had quite a bit to say about Obama's address. The consensus, at least from what I have read, appears to be fairly positive. At the very least, I think we can agree that it was nice to hear President Obama acknowledge nonbelievers in his address. Where opinions diverge a bit is on whether this was merely a nice gesture or a sign of ... Read Full Story

Image by vjack via Flickr There is a new meme going around started by Friendly Atheist to see how hardcore an atheist one is. I'm not sure how many of the items on this list translate into being a hardcore atheist, but I'll play. The rules are simple: Copy and paste the list below on your own site, boldfacing the things you’ve done. (Feel free to add your own elaboration and commentary to each item!) And the list: 1. Participated in the Blasphemy Challenge. 2. Met at least one of the “Four Horsemen” (Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris) in person. 3. ... Read Full Story

Secular humanism is much broader than atheism and entails many things that atheism does not. This will be easy to understand if you remember that atheism refers to nothing more than the lack of belief in any sort of gods. So what is secular humanism? We begin with humanism. According to Paul Kurtz , "Humanism is an ethical, scientific, and philosophical outlook" which can be traced "back to the philosophers and poets of ancient Greece and Rome, Confucian China, and the Charvaka movement in classical India." Humanism is an optimistic stance, entailing "confidence in the power of human beings to solve their own problems ... Read Full Story

In a desperate attempt to secure its electoral base, the government is shamefully wooing religious extremistsAs every middlebrow with a newspaper column or Radio 4 slot to fill agrees, a vulgar "new atheism" is sweeping Britain. The readers of Richard Dawkins, Philip Pullman and Christopher Hitchens are, they tell us, crass because they do not appreciate the mystery of religion, the consolations of ritual and all the rest of it, and also...

Image via WikipediaWhy are you an atheist? When someone learns of your atheism for the first time, I think it makes sense to expect that the why question will soon follow. It is a fair question, especially for those of us who live in areas that are especially hostile to atheists. The thing is, this question can catch one off guard because providing a complete answer can be a lengthy exercise. I'll give you my answer below, and I'd be...

Chairman Bart Stupak (D-MI)Photo: Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images I've frequently written that the regular use of epithets like "fundamentalist," "intolerant," and "militant" with respect to so-called "new" atheists is not so much a sincere attempt to objectively describe atheists, but rather a dishonest attempt to encourage dismissing them as unworthy of attention or consideration. I've also written that this is not in any way a tactic...
