Why should we believe in God? Because God said so? What if God doesn't exist? What shall we believe in then?

This is a place to promote the vision of a humanist society. A society that places the value of all human life as the central value and concern, higher than money or institutions. A society that promotes non-violence as the only way to achieve results, fighting discrimination in all its forms; racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, etc. A society that encourages the continuous development and free distribution of human knowledge and allows freedom of beliefs and ideas

Welcome to the 34th edition of The Humanist Symposium! It is time to replenish your sense of awe, restore your confidence in humanity, and above all else, promote humanism as a viable alternative to superstition and delusion. That's right, the reality-based community has much to offer and this is a great forum for sharing some of it. Beyond Atheism Let me say at the outset that I love the idea of promoting atheism. It is something I try to to regularly here at Atheist Revolution . The trouble is, those of us who understand the meaning of atheism (i.e., the lack of theistic belief) ... Read Full Story

Image by clemente via Flickr It has been clear to me for some time that we need a secular community , and I am happy to see others making similar arguments . I have called on my fellow atheist bloggers to begin the task of cataloging options for uniting nonbelievers . I think it is time to again pick up this task and move forward in building community among atheists. This post will serve as a reorientation to the task and attempt to outline some characteristics of the sort of community I think we need. My goal here is not to persuade but to ... Read Full Story

Image by jmtimages via Flickr President Obama's mention of nonbelievers in his inaugural address did not go without notice by the media. Bloc Raisonneur did a great job of cataloging the initial reactions for us. Not surprisingly, the atheist blogosphere has had quite a bit to say about Obama's address. The consensus, at least from what I have read, appears to be fairly positive. At the very least, I think we can agree that it was nice to hear President Obama acknowledge nonbelievers in his address. Where opinions diverge a bit is on whether this was merely a nice gesture or a sign of ... Read Full Story

Image by vjack via Flickr There is a new meme going around started by Friendly Atheist to see how hardcore an atheist one is. I'm not sure how many of the items on this list translate into being a hardcore atheist, but I'll play. The rules are simple: Copy and paste the list below on your own site, boldfacing the things you’ve done. (Feel free to add your own elaboration and commentary to each item!) And the list: 1. Participated in the Blasphemy Challenge. 2. Met at least one of the “Four Horsemen” (Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris) in person. 3. ... Read Full Story

Secular humanism is much broader than atheism and entails many things that atheism does not. This will be easy to understand if you remember that atheism refers to nothing more than the lack of belief in any sort of gods. So what is secular humanism? We begin with humanism. According to Paul Kurtz , "Humanism is an ethical, scientific, and philosophical outlook" which can be traced "back to the philosophers and poets of ancient Greece and Rome, Confucian China, and the Charvaka movement in classical India." Humanism is an optimistic stance, entailing "confidence in the power of human beings to solve their own problems ... Read Full Story

I see a lot of misunderstandings and errors about atheism and atheists all over the net. People don't understand what atheism is, what the definition of atheism is, or the difference between atheism and agnosticism. People claim that atheism is a religion, that it requires faith, that it's a form of denial, that there are no real atheists, and that there are no atheists in foxholes. This introduction to atheism answers most of the most common...

The website Atheism Exposed claims that religion is under attack and that an all out counterinsurgency campaign is needed to defend the godly: Militant atheism should concern all believers. It is a form of fanaticism on a par with extreme religious movements. Like religious extremism it is characterized by intensity and arrogance. Like religious extremism it tears at, and ridicules opposite viewpoints. It is often aggressive, disrespectful...

C.S. Lewis is often described as an "apostle" to the skeptics - that he somehow has a special affinity for the arguments, sensibilities, and perspectives of religious doubters and can therefore more easily reach them than other apologists. Lewis was himself an atheist for many years, after all, so it's understandable why this would make sense.   Read Article: C.S. Lewis vs. Atheism and Atheists: Why Does Lewis Ridicule Atheists?C.S. Many atheists hide their atheism from friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family because they are afraid of the reactions of others if they find out. So many religious theists, especially Christians, are intolerant of atheism and atheists that atheists are forced to hide their true feelings. It would be better if more atheists could and did come out of the closet, but they need to be prepared.   Read Article: Revealing Your Atheism: Should...
