The FDA is reportedly investigating lettuce grown in Arizona as the possible source for the outbreak, after the New York State Public Health Laboratory discovered the contamination in a bag of shredded lettuce Wednesday. Local authorities have apparently been investigating the matter for several weeks.
College students at the University of Michigan are among those sickened by the produce. An E. coli infection causes mild diarrhea or more severe complications, like kidney damage or hemolytic uremic syndrome, which could cause bleeding in the kidney or brain.
