Romaine Lettuce Recall 2010

Freshway Foods is recalling romaine lettuce in 23 states because of a possible E. coli scare linked to the produce. At least 19 people have fallen ill in Ohio, New York, and Michigan, according to HuffigtonPost.com. No one has died, but 3 have life-threatening symptoms.

The FDA is reportedly investigating lettuce grown in Arizona as the possible source for the outbreak, after the New York State Public Health Laboratory discovered the contamination in a bag of shredded lettuce Wednesday. Local authorities have apparently been investigating the matter for several weeks.

College students at the University of Michigan are among those sickened by the produce. An E. coli infection causes mild diarrhea or more severe complications, like kidney damage or hemolytic uremic syndrome, which could cause bleeding in the kidney or brain.
