Just when I thought I couldn’t be happier after hearing that Friday Night Lights garnered a two season pick up, along comes the season finale. A nice tranquil beginning to the docile sounds of Jakob Dylan with a rundown of all the coupling and the funny juxtaposition of a near empty baseball stadium considering during the football season the whole town shuts down and shows up. Friday Night Lights displays the stress that the town gives the high school players to win, and the hope that the team gives to a small town, and how a team has its low points, its high points, and how they come together as a team on their way to victory. Editor’s note: DirecTV is airing season four of Friday Night Lights now, in advance of NBC. Last week’s shocking conclusion — Coach forfeits his first game at East Dillon owing to the overwhelming carnage inflicted on his players — has an immediate and equally shocking affect on this week’s episode: the heartbreaking image of Mrs. Coach, up before dawn, carefully removing a forest of white surrender flags from the front yard. A killer scene...

“You’ve lost your inner pirate,” cameoing Texas Tech coach Mike Leach tells Coach Taylor at a random encounter at a gas station in the second episode of the fourth season. Being a casual, at best, football fan, I had no idea who Leach was. I thought this was just some random loon giving Coach advice, albeit a random loon who might be on to something. Last week saw Coach throwing in the towel after barely making it through a brutal first half...

(S04E02) In case you think the Coach Eric Taylor has all the answers, this episode shows that's not always the way it is. In last week's show, the East Dillon Lions were so awful, Coach couldn't take it. Things were hardly better for Tami at Dillon, although by comparison, her school looks like paradise. Eric's on the...
