Last Tuesday Paula Félix-Didier traveled on a secret mission to Berlin in order to meet with three film experts. The museum director from Buenos Aires had something special in her luggage: a copy of a long version of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, including scenes believed lost for almost 80 years. After examining the film the three experts are certain: The find from Buenos Aires is a real treasure, a worldwide sensation. Metropolis, the most important silent film in German history, can from this day on be considered to have been rediscovered. Fritz Lang presented the original version of Metropolis in Berlin in January 1927. The ... Read Full Story

I don’t think I’d ever realized M ’s technical importance. Lang creates quite a few filmmaking standards here, still in use today. Non-specific to genre, M features some brilliant off-screen dialogue work. It’s the earliest example (I’ve ever seen) of hearing a scene’s action while looking at something else. There’s also Lang’s approach to the sound. Lang uses the silence for the emphasis, shocking the viewer with loud noises every once in a while. This will probably sound weird, but I’ve always been a sucker for movies and books that focus on bleak, dystopian futures where the boundaries of humanity are blurred, and the earth is on the edge of chaos and destruction. I thought perhaps there was something slightly wrong there, but turns out I’m not the only one after all. Cyberpunk influences have been infiltrating designer collections; even those from who you’d expect nothing less than dainty refinement (we’re looking at you Christopher Bailey). Wondergirl shoot; outfit by Jessie Hill; Chloe Boots; Sean Young in Blade Runner. So what is Cyberpunk? Read It: Read all of ... Read Full Story

Next Article ► July 2nd, 2008 | Return Home Perhaps one of the most influential silent films ever made, Fritz Lang's 1927 METROPOLIS, has been released and re-released over the years. Yet, every time since the movie's premiere -- it has never been intact. You see, parts of the film have been lost over time and never seen again. Entire sections of the film -- plot, characters -- have disappeared entirely. As such, we've never actually seen this masterpiece of a film as it was intended. But that might just now change. According to the German publication, Die Zeit, a near-complete, if not complete ... Read Full Story

With two great bodies of work, the first in the German silent era, the other in Hollywood talkies, Lang (1890-1976) bestrides the history of cinema, arguably the most original, innovative and influential figure in film history.
