With a smile and a wave — not to mention a win — Galen Rupp bid goodbye to college and started a new chapter in his career. Rupp easily won the 10,000 meters on the track at Hayward Field at the U.S. championships, his last race representing the University of Oregon. On Saturday, Rupp plans to interview agents, and then he'll likely ponder endorsement deals while preparing for the world championships in Berlin in August. For years, Galen Rupp has done workouts on a five-lane track in a corner of the Nike corporate campus named for Michael Johnson. Next to the track is a bronze statue of Johnson, owner of four Olympic gold medals, rising out of the blocks and wearing his signature gold spikes. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Call it the “Fabulous 5,000” part two. Galen Rupp ran 13:18.12 in the 5,000 meters Friday night at the Tyson Invitational to break four decades-old records held by some of the great names in the sport of running. The senior from Portland, Ore., broke Doug Padilla’s American indoor 5,000 meter record of 13:20.55 set 27 years ago at the 1982 Millrose Games in New York City.
