In 2005, a little game called God of War was released for the PS2. The game was an action game like the popular Devil May Cry games, but steeped in greek mythology. The story featured Kratos, a former servant of the God War, Aries, seeking a way to kill his malicious master. The only way to do that is by retrieving Pandora’s Box, the only equipment that can kill a God. After he retrieves, the box, gets killed by Aries and sent to the Underworld, climbs out of the Underworld, and use Pandora’s Box to kill Aries, many people thought that there was never going to be a sequel (or I thought there wasn’t). However, those skeptics were proven wrong in 2007, when Sony released God of War 2 for the PS2. Although the game was not as great as the last one (by a tiny bit of course!), the game proves to be one of the best games released for the PS2 in 2007.

God of War 2 still features a revenge plot as much as it’s bloody brethren. After killing Aries, Kratos became the new God of War. However, the Gods will not absolve the horrible memories that has been hunting Kratos for more than ten years. Because of this, he tries to do everything possible to get the Gods peeved. One way was by invading Athens. But, his invasion was halted by the Colossus of Rhodes, which sprung to life by Zeus. After minutes in the game, Kratos finds out that the only way to kill the colossus is by using the Blade Of Olympus, the same blade used in the war against the titans. After killing the colossus with this fabled blade, Kratos finds out that the blade has completely drained his god-like powers, and Zeus takes this opportunity to kill Kratos. However, Kratos was saved by Gia, one of the titans who fought Zeus during the great war. Now, Kratos wants revenge, and to do so, he needs to go back through time, right before Zeus killed him, get his god-like powers back, and kill this omnipotent God. The story elements that I found interesting is the “you can’t change your fate” theme throughout the whole game and the number of classic Greek mythology characters that will appear throughout the game. There’s Icarus, Jason, the King of Thebes, just to name a few. Although you kill these characters it’s still great to see them.

God of War 2 isn’t set to revolutionize the gaming franchise. It simply trying to make all of the awesome features in God of War 1 better. One new feature that appeared in the beginning level is Pegasus sequence. In this sequence, Kratos is riding on Pegasus, and must travel to the Sister of Faith Temple to change his untimely fate. Of course, there’s baddies on the way that Kratos must kill. This sequence is by far, one of the biggest things I would love to see in God of War 3. These sequences are fast, and requires quick reflexives. Oh yeah, I also liked ripping the wings off Griffins (now those never get old!). Another improved element in God Of War 2 is the new sub-weapons. You still get the blades of chaos-I mean “Athena’s Blades”- but throughout the game, Kratos will gain new weapons that he can use throughout his adventure. First weapon is the Barbarian Hammer. This weapon is the second most powerful weapon in Kratos inventory. Although you can’t evade with the hammer (which can pose to be a big problem during boss fights), it surely makes up for with its brute power, and its ability to summon souls to aid you in battle. Another cool weapon is the Spear Of Destiny, which is not the most powerful weapon in your inventory, but its by far the weapon of choice when you need to get quick attacks in. Kratos will also unlock new magic spells like Typhoon Bow, which gives Kratos a longer range than Zesus’s fury in God of War 1 and Atlas Quake. Another feature that makes a triumphant return is the context sensitive mini games that made God of War 1 popular. God of War 2 contest sensitive mini games are more brutal than the original. Sure, classic context sensitive games return like removing an eye from a cyclops, or splitting a head from a minotaur, but some of the context sensitive mini games are down right brutal. From the killing a griffin, decapitated a viking, to the last boss fight, God of War 2 will make you feel more of a total bad-ass than the last one.

God of War 2 is probably one of the last great games released for the PS2. Since the game cost $20 now, and God of War 3 is confirmed to be released for the PS3, it doesn’t hurt to pick up this classic PS2 game.
