This blog is a journey through the developments and refinement of a Central Texas Landscape. It follows the comical gardening journey through a series of trial and error events that ultimately helped define a tiny part of this planet. This Wikizine is intended to be a good introduction to designing and implementing a landscape in Central Texas, a landscape born form sweat, freewill and a desire for something more adventourous than the obligatory Saint Augustine, water guzzeling lawn.

“Hit the button! Hit the button, now!” Panic is setting in, in the patch. My eyes are being called upon to be extra critical… what needs to be changed? What would a set of fresh eyes see? More importantly what would a camera lens see? Is the lens forgiving? Perhaps there is a camera “weed” filter for the camera? Linda, tell me this exists? The ESP is scheduled for a “Central Texas Gardener” film shoot shortly, and the Botox lady is very pleased about this indeed. She now shouts at me in her over-the-top Austrian accent every time I pass her… “Yoo-hoo, over zere, ... Read Full Story

“ESP has made it back from the lowlands, did ye do battle on the English oer, on yer trip ESP? Tell me ye built spears twice the length of a man? Did ye unite the clans? Did ye… Shhh! Relax William, I will tell you all about it, if you give me a minute, okay perhaps more than a minute, this is rather a muckle-long post! I suggest you grab a glass of your favorite beverage and if you have a slow connection, my apologies. Ahh the long and arduous journey to Mordor , I mean the borders of Scotland. Being a hobbit does ... Read Full Story

“Time in a Garden” So this month at: http://www.gardeninggonewild.com/?p=7073 the workshop topic is the influence of time on our gardens. I first started this blog almost a year and a half ago, it has taught me and forced me, in a good way, to learn more details about the plants and critters that inhabit my habitat, but first and foremost up-keeping this journal has taught me about the time/space continuum. “Spock, what IS he talking about”. “Unclear Captain”. It has documented once a week, (almost without fail), the growth of my hobbits, and in parallel, the maturing of my garden, and my knowledge of ... Read Full Story

With the temperatures beginning to soar this week, Central Texas has started to once again feel like the red planet. This recent heat has had a really strange effect on the (recently facially reconstructed) "Cactus Man"...   "My eyes, my eyes, what is happening to me?" He seems to be developing a rather alarmed "expression" of sorts. The sun has caused a contraction of the "skin" during the healing process (post cacti operata), this was especially apparent around the delicate eye tissues around the cacti paddle. It appears my cactus pad is unfortunately aging prematurely!     "I am a doctor, not a botanist,  I will proceed to sick-bay shortly Jim, just as ... Read Full Story

"Neo, we have a problem. The sentinels have been deployed over at the ESP". "Trinity, those are old passion vine flowers." "Still, the oracle told me this would happen Neo"    My front porch is full of these sentinels that have shriveled and dropped off my red passion vine.      From riches to rags. The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long. And you have burned so very very brightly. Blade Runner. This zinnia simply just burned,   it fried to a crisp in one day! On a lighter note... Who said this is a drought loving plant.  This one has had ... Read Full Story
Plateau Gardening reader Sue of Crossville sent an e-mail asking, “What have I done wrong? I got this Christmas cactus years ago. It is a Zygocactus truncates according to my flower book. The plant was growing in a shallow amount of poor looking soil. I changed the pot and dirt in the spring of 2008. It normally blooms in early June but had no flowers that year. Though it has been getting new shoots, it did not bloom in spring-2009 either.”

And it’s still flowering! I moved it into the kitchen from the living room and set it on the central island there, as my coffee table (old vintage blue trunk) gets filled quickly with knick knacks, namely art supplies as I sit and doodle on the couch. I’m officially renaming this Christmas Cactus, Birthday Cactus. The [...]

This is an update on my blog entry "Gardening Around the Homeless" dated 10 April 2006. We live on the bank of the Guadalupe River in Willow Glen, California. In 2006, I started to create an informal cactus fence to deter homeless transients from passing through or camping on our river bank. I am even more motivated to continue this project by two big river bank fires recently caused by homeless campers just upstream of our property. I...
