DENVER — The Rockies firmed up their minor legue coaching staffs. The notable addition is former big leaguer Joe Eischen, who will serve as Colorado’s Tri-City Dust Devils’ pitching coach. Doug Linton takes over as the Sky Sox pitching coach as Chuck Kniffin resigned to take care of his elderly father. Here is the release [...]

The Colorado Rockies chose not to tender a contract to third baseman Garrett Atkins last night, making him a free agent. Colorado had been trying to trade Atkins since last summer, but found no suitable, or willing, trade partners. Over the past four seasons, the 30-year-old Atkins' OPS has continually declined, from .965, to .853, to .780, and finally to .650. That ultimately led to him being supplanted by third baseman Ian Stewart at...

You've probably never heard of Matt Daley, unless you're a fan of an NL West team. Heck, I'd never heard of him until the Rockies called the right-handed relief pitcher up early last season. Given that I know about 2000 active players, Daley's failure to merit a blip on my radar reflected his anonymity. He didn't get a big league look until he was nearly 27. In his first season in the majors, Daley certainly showed one pronounced trend: he...

I’m sure Garrett Atkins received a lot of nice things for his 30th birthday on Saturday, but a new contract from the Colorado Rockies was not among them. The Rockies informed Atkins,  just as he was sitting down to enjoy a little cake and ice cream, that they had elected to decline offering him a 2010 contract, officially ending his ten year run with the organization and a six year run with the major league team. Yes, that’s correct, they...

Did I call the Rockies heartless for firing Garrett Atkins on his 30th birthday? I take it all back now. Just look at that pretty turf topper wedding cake topper thing they gave him as a parting gift for his six years of hard work and production. I’m sure he probably would have preferred an actual birthday cake, or a motorcycle, or a hunting rifle, or above all a new contract, but it’s really nice to see the Rockies didn’t send Atkins away...

Garrett Bernard Atkins (August 3, 2003 — December 12, 2009) Unlike past The Life and Times as a Rockie retrospectives (Valerio De La Santos, Kips Wells, Jayson Nix and Luis Vizcaino), I actually like liked the guy we’re honoring today. Garrett Atkins was a cornerrstone for the Colorado Rockies from 2005-2008 offensively, and a corner infielder with hands of stone defensively. So that’s the last you’ll hear of his defense. Atkins had cups of...

The silent understanding has become a reality: Colorado Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins has been non-tendered and is now a free agent. The decision not to offer Atkins a new contract by today's deadline comes on the heels of failed attempts to trade the fading third baseman; most teams knew they needed only to out-wait the organization, then snatch the long-time Rockie on the open market. The move bequeaths third base full-time to Ian...

He’s not getting a lot of love in the 3B talks this offseason, but he should be. I can imagine you’re not exactly on the Atkins train right now and that’s understandable but let’s finish up looking at exactly why he’s a great option: 1. Buy low.  His price tag should be sufficiently low enough to make betting on his return worthwhile. 2. Role play.  I can’t imagine he’ll want to be a platooner or back-up guy, but if the Phillies can bring...

Troy, do you have any updated information about the status of Jason Giambi and where he might be playing in 2010 . I think there is a lot of validity to bringing him back with the departure of Garrett Atkins who was reduced to pretty much pinch hitting anyway ,what are your thoughts .You always seem pretty level headed about Rockies personnel.

I wanted to read this article but I couldn't get past the ridiculous first statement. Since when is it a weakness to utilize an infielder (Bernier) who has consistently led the league defensively each year? I don't know, is a career 2nd base fielding percentage of .981 (thebaseballcube.com) bad? I don't know, is that "so hurt, so bad?" And journeyman? He spent 6 years with the Rockies didnt he? Such lack of insight in just the first...

I've been picking up on some serious anti Garrett Atkins vibes here on AN. Why? What we're doing here is some dieting, counting stats, rate stats and of course jumping! Follow me for more! (Apologies in advance for my lack of pretty charts and graphs, I'm just not that good with that stuff.   Alright, let me see this now:The guy had a BABIP of .247, only about 60 points below his career norm of .311. Oh sure you say, numbers like that must...
