Browns Terminate DB Gary Baxter’s Contract

Today the Browns decided that the vaillant comeback of cornerback Gary Baxter was not going to be enough for him to make it all the way back in 2008, and decided to cut ties with the CB, releasing him. Baxter was attempting to make it back after suffering a nasty injury back on October 22nd of 2006 when he tore patella tendons in both knees.
Baxter was doing some work in camp, but then had to have some cartilage removed from his knee his past Tuesday. “Last year, we were able to hold a roster spot open for Gary as he attempted to make a monumental comeback,” Browns general manager Phil Savage said. “After he underwent a knee scope last week, we are unfortunately not in a position to hold a roster spot this year. We are releasing Gary today in hopes he will be able to continue his rehab and get back into the NFL, either with another team or possibly the Browns. Gary has made tremendous strides thus far and we believe he can play professional football again in the future.”
A 2001 2nd round pick of the Ravens, Baxter was a big free agent pickup of the Browns back after the 2004 season. He played four seasons with the Ravens, playing in 54 games making 5 interceptions. With the Browns in two seasons he played in 8 games and had three interceptions.
