Russia's Gazprom said on Wednesday that it had completed the 1.6-billion-dollar purchase of 51 percent of SeverEnergia, which owns former assets of the bankrupt Yukos oil firm, from Italy's ENI and Enel. "Today Gazprom completed the deal for the acquisition of 51 percent of SeverEnergia," the state-controlled gas giant said in a statement. Gazprom put the size of the deal at 1.6 billion dollars (1.1 billion euros) and said the Italian firms would now own 49 percent of SeverEnergia, which had previously been 60-percent owned by ENI and 40-percent by Enel. Russian gas monopoly Gazprom on Wednesday reported a 62 percent drop in net profit for the first quarter of 2009, when the company was hit hard by disruptions of gas supplies to Europe and the plunging value of the ruble. Net profit at the world's largest gas producer dropped to 103.7 billion rubles ($3.3 billion) during the January-March period from 273.4 billion a year earlier. The oil subsidiary of the world's biggest gas company Gazprom has won control of London-listed Russian oil producer Sibir Energy after taking over one of its shareholders, the press said. Gazprom Neft on June 22 acquired 100 percent of the shares in the Orton Oil Company, which in turn held a 50-percent stake in the firm Bennfield, one of Sibir's biggest shareholders, Gazprom Neft said in a statement. According to the Interfax news agency and Vedomosti newspaper, Bennfield holds a 46.7 percent stake in Sibir Energy. Transportation Minister Igor Levitin announced yesterday that a new seaport would be built in the Sakhalin village of Ilyinsky to serve the future development of hydrocarbon deposits off the shores of the island. He cited the need to provide transportation in connection with Sakhalin projects 3 through 9. The new port, he said, would be served by oil and natural gas pipelines that will make hydrocarbon transportation for future projects 10-15 percent cheaper than for Sakhalin 1 and 2.
