FOXBOROUGH — The New England Patriots' season began with Tom Brady back from torn knee ligaments. It ended with Wes Welker sidelined with the same serious injury. Not much else was consistent for a team that hoped to prolong its dynasty of the past decade with the return of its star quarterback. Instead, it started the new one with a lopsided loss that no one expected.

Randy Moss stared at the scoreboard after his third touchdown catch and saw a fan wearing a Randy Moss mask on the screen. The real Randy -- the one who played hard Sunday -- stood on the sideline with a huge grin as he made his parting-of-the-defense motion, sweeping his arms from his chest to his sides.  

Patriots running back Fred Taylor is active after missing 10 games with an ankle injury. Taylor, the top rusher in Jacksonville Jaguars history, faced his former team Sunday. The last time the New England Patriots faced the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tom Brady completed 26 of 28 passes in a playoff game. That kind of performance by Brady on Sunday should be enough to get the Patriots back into the postseason and, depending on the outcomes of other games, knock the Jaguars out of contention.  

New England coach Bill Belichick remains coy about whether Tom Brady and other Patriots stars will start Sunday against the Houston Texans. On a conference call with reporters in Houston, Belichick wouldn't directly answer the question he's faced all week about how much playing time his starters will get with their playoff spot secure.  

With a playoff berth clinched, several Patriots players say they still want to play in the regular-season finale Sunday at Houston. Coach Bill Belichick hasn't disclosed what he'll do, but guard Logan Mankins said if Belichick rests his starters and New England loses, ending the playoff chances of other teams, those teams put themselves in that position.
