So the thing is, I bought Hollywoodland after it was released on DVD a year or so ago and simply have not taken the time to watch it. I really enjoy mysteries and superheros so I thought that this might be a treat. This movie also has some of the biggest names Hollywood has to offer, Ben Affleck , Adrien Brody , Diane Lane , and Bob Hoskins . Not to mention this film was directed by Allen Coulter who has been a regular director on many of the most beloved HBO Series that channel has seen including The Sopranos and Sex and the ... Ben Affleck gets a bum rap. I’m convinced it all has to do with Gigli and that Bennifer incident a few years back. I first noticed him in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (one of my all time favorite movies with another cutie — Joseph Fiennes). Then came DAREDEVIL (which I kind of liked, but then again, I love comic book heroes) and I thought again, I like his looks and he’s got that little boy grin and twinkle in his eye. I was hooked. I recently watched HOLLYWOODLAND in which Ben plays George Reeves and I enjoyed it. Gave you a lot of interesting takes ... Read Full Story

Hollywoodland is not a narrative mess. It’d be a far more interesting (and far less boring) two hours if it were. Instead, Paul Bernbaum’s plotting is intentional and considered. Neither Bernbaum nor director Allen Coulter seem to understand the problems with having two protagonists, not having anything to do with each other, juxtaposed for a couple hours, however. It starts really strong, with Adrien Brody fantastic as the glib private detective. He has a solid sidekick and love interest in Caroline Dhavernas and Coulter does do a great job giving Hollywoodland the right feel. The lack of a definite time period– Hollywoodland takes place ... Desperate for any job that can get his name in the papers, an old friend tosses Simo a bone and he goes to see Reeves' mother, who is convinced her son did not commit suicide as the LAPD have concluded. Kirk (Kirk Alyn)best known for being the first actor to play Superman on screen, in the 1948 film serial Superman, and its 1950 sequel Atom Man Vs. Superman. Some critics argue that Alyn's portrayal of the Man of Steel was superior to that of George Reeves, because (in the tradition of radio's Superman, Bud Collyer) he played Clark Kent and Superman very differently, adding to the disguise. As pointed out in Grossman's book, Reeves' characterizations of the dual roles were much more alike. Also, Alyn looked much more like the comic book version of the character than Reeves, with his chiseled face topped with ... Read Full Story
