The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $6.3 million to two Indiana colleges to install environmentally friendly geothermal energy systems. Ball State University is getting $5 million to replace coal fired boilers with geothermal heat pump systems. And the Indiana Institute of Technology will receive $1.3 million to install geothermal heat pumps using carbon dioxide as the cooling medium. U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu this week announced up to $338 million in Recovery Act funding for the exploration and development of new geothermal fields and research into advanced geothermal technologies. These grants will support 123 projects in 39 states, with recipients including private industry, academic institutions, tribal entities, local governments, and DOE’s National Laboratories.
