Gianni Versace was considered a master of fashion. Born in Calabria, in southern Italy, he learned to design and make his own clothes as a young boy and worked for several Italian designers before opening his own popular Milan boutique in 1978. He was awarded the coveted American Fashion Oscar in 1993, but in 1997 his career was cut short when he was murdered on the steps of his Miami, Florida, mansion.
