Gillian Leigh Anderson is an Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning American actress, best known for her role as FBI Agent Dana Scully in the American TV series The X-Files and her role as Lady Dedlock in the BBC TV series Bleak House.

Gillian Anderson meets Doctor Who!

Here's one I didn't see coming! "Foxy" X-Files star Gillian Anderson is to appear in the next series of Doctor Who as a deadly new enemy to Matt Smith, the 11th Timelord to star in the series.

The actress played Dana Scully in hit show The X-Files and is reportedly being lined up to play The Rani, a renegade Timelord who last appeared in the series in the 1980s.

According to sources, BBC execs want the star to appear in a one-off episode of Matt's first series, due to air in 2010.

"Gillian obviously has a massive sci-fi following and it’s felt it would be a major coup to have her appear in Doctor Who,” says a show insider. “The team behind the show are keen for the next Doctor to have lots of new enemies and Gillian would be a glamorous and impressive addition to the list. The Rani would be a perfect role for her as the character used to be regarded as one of the Doctor’s most deadly opponents."

Anderson last appeared in the second X-Files movie, "I Want To Believe" last year alongside her X-Files costar David Duchovny and Scottish comic legend Billy Connelly. When Doctor Who makes it's series comeback in 2010, it will be with a new lead writer and executive producer - Stephen Moffat - who takes over from Russel T Davies at the end of the year.

It does seem to me a little unlikely that Anderson would appear in the series at this point so to be on the safe side I'd chalk this up as rumour for now, but that said, Doctor Who has enjoyed a massive swell in popularity since its return in 2005 and many stars have already played a part in the ongoing series.

The return of The Rani would be a very welcome development. Anyone who watched the Easter special a couple of weeks ago is asking themselves what the prophecy of "the four knocks" actually meant and while most think it foretells The Masters return, it could very well signify the return of The Rani - and Gillian Anderson to our screens.
