The Swell Season Live At The Artists Den •••½ The Artists Den Cara Dillon The Redcastle Sessions •••• Proper Films The parallels between these two DVD releases extend a little beyond the tenuous link of Irish blood and a folksy sensibility. Both films present their subjects in intimate acoustic mode - The Swell Season (aka ‘Once’ couple Glen Hansard and Marketa Iglóva) in a historic church and Cara Dillon in an old converted hospital on the shores of Lough Foyle in Co. Donegal - and both are based on a familiar format. Following in the wake of Patty Griffin’s emotional tour de force, Hansard ... Read Full Story

It was a dark and stormy night! Yes, it was, but it was also a wonderful night of music as Swell Season and Josh Ritter (solo) blessed us with their music last night at the Pines Theater in Northampton. Josh came on first, just as the skies opened up for the first time. His ever-present humor helped us survive a pretty good downpour. He said he didn't have too many precipitation songs and sang "Snow Is Gone" and as well as "Girl in the War," with its lyrics "They sparkle bubble over, in the morning all you got is rain." As usual he told ... Read Full Story

Almost four months ago I got an email in my Inbox from Ticketmaster notifying me that Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, otherwise know as The Swell Season , would be at the historic Ryman Auditorium sometime near the end of September. Being one of my top five albums of all time, it was time to start making plans. The last show Kristin and I went to see there was Damien Rice and it blew us away. I’m convinced that this Wednesday night won’t be much different. From what I can tell this will be one of only eleven shows that they are doing in ... Read Full Story

I didn’t know anything about the movie Once or the musicians in it until the Oscars, when Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova received the Oscar for Best Song. Well, I guess I had seen a review of it on Ebert & Roper, but I don’t recall paying much attention…the movie certainly didn’t stick with me at that time and it seemed all new again when the Oscars came on. I heard their Oscar nominated song, Falling Slowly , and thought it was alright, figured I’d put the movie on my Netflix list and get to it when I could. My boyfriend put it on ... Read Full Story
"If you flirt with fame, don't be surprised when it offers you sex," Marketa Irglova once told her bandmate Glen Hansard. Nobody could have predicted that the unlikely pair who comprises The Swell Season-classically trained Czech pianist Irglova and The Frames frontman Hansard-would be transformed into international celebrities after winning an Academy Award for Best Song for "Falling Slowly," the slow, lovelorn ballad that wooed audiences...

The Swell Season with Rachael Yamagata Indie Folk December 3, 2009 at the Auditorium Theatre By Selena Fragassi The Swell Season are what folk artists are made of – the sugary Marketa Irglova and the spicy Glen Hansard strongly believe that for every song, there is a story. And so it went when the duo returned to the Chicago stage in support of their latest disc, Strict Joy (Anti), where each number in a powerful 22-song set began with...

Glen Hansard never imagined he would one day be having dinner at Barbra Streisand's place in Malibu, Calif., but there he was at Babs' mansion with his songwriting partner in the Swell Season, Marketa Irglova. It was during the run-up to the 2008 ...

As a way of thanking its supporters, KEXP brought Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova of The Swell Season to the Triple Door in Seattle. Without a band, the duo gave an intimate performance that showcased its deeply personal songwriting, including a new song and a blazing cover of Tim Buckley's "Buzzin' Fly."

"Low Rising" is the lovely new single from The Swell Season, aka Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová from the film Once. The song comes from their latest album, Strict Joy. Interestingly, the video was directed by Sam Beam, who is better known for his musical recordings under the name Iron & Wine. I wonder if Beam was referencing Bad Luck Shleprock by having the rain falling just on their heads. Probably not, but it's still fun to think so. I had...
