Drink me! Breathe me! Think not! Mayday!

"Be Air Aware" is the theme of this year's Air Quality Awareness Week, April 28 to May 2, 2008. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established Air Quality Awareness Week to remind Americans of the important role that air quality forecasts can play in their daily lives.

May is also the beginning of ozone season, where excessive sun exposure may have a negative impact on your health. Stay covered up, and offset the loss of healthful rays with vitamin D.

But what's more detrimental to your health than sun exposure through a weakened ozone layer? Air particulates, which lodge in your lungs, causing everything from shortness of breath to cancer.

The American Lung Association announced their State of the Air 2008 report, this year's list of the dirtiest air cities. It's pretty much the same as in past years. Check it to see how your county rates; you can just enter in your zip code, although all counties are not covered.

If you want to see who's contributing to particulates in your lungs, find out now at Scorecard by entering in your zip code. This site looks very complete.

Of course, lots of us were surprised at the recent news that the water you drink may contain "a vast supply" of pharmaceuticals, which water companies do not test for. If you want to know what you're drinking, reference the National Tap Water Database. Easy to use, scary to see.

A Harris Poll reported that three quarters of us agree that water quality standards can't be too high, and cost is not an issue, but we have continued to see program cuts.

Complain now.
