Once again it's that time when we spit shine our ambitions and commit to
achieve more, have more, or refrain from doing something we could live without.
"This year I will..." How could you finish that sentence for the New Year?
The truth is we make resolutions on New Year’s Eve that we quite often never truly take ownership of or even truly expect to achieve. Have you ever made a wish? Sure you have, we all have. On Thanksgiving, we have a ritual in our home where two people grip opposing ends of the turkey wishbone, we quitely make a wish and pull. As the ritual goes, after the brutal combat comes to an end the victor of the large piece of the wishbone will have her dream become real, it seldom does. Why you may ask?
We have been told that if we put a powerful enough belief out into the universe we can achieve it. I was also told, "If it’s God’s will, it will come to pass." I place confidence in that both of those statments are true. And yet, for the higher power or the universe to dash in and assist you get what you long for you have to do more than just wish for it, you have to know exactly what it is that you crave first.
Put another way, the last time I came up with the big end of the wishbone I prayed for a million bucks and I did not get it. And that may have been a blessing in disguise. Had I received my prayers, I may have been surrounded by a enormous herd of big horn elk. Asking for a million bucks is just too ambiguous to be anything else than a dream.
Notwithstanding wishes do every so often come true I’m confident the majority of us would rather not bet our future on the potential payoff of a dream.
We possess what Maxwell Maltz calls, an
internal success mechanism. It’s the part of you that will drive the rest of you kicking and yelling if necessary toward what you indubitably crave in life. This year you can start programming your
internal success mechanism by turning your "New Year’s Resolution" into an actual intention for
strategic goal setting.
That requires getting a clear understanding on exactly what you desire, why you desire it, and then writing it down as a clear and succinct
strategic goal setting statement. The fact is your power is infinite. You can have for yourself and your family everything you dream about but you must first make it a precise intention. Then you can exclaim to the rest of the world "This year, I will..."
