Born on New Year's Eve, 1965, in Shenyang, Liaoning, China, Gong Li first came into international prominence through close collaboration with Chinese director Zhang Yimou. Chinese film director Zhang Yimou is set to return to Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium to stage a version of the opera "Turandot", state press reported on May 21. The October 6-7 production which costs 100 million yuan (US$14.7 million) to produce, will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. This is not the first time Zhang is directing the Giacomo Puccini opera about the love story of a Chinese princess. Zhang Yimou is not only suing the publisher and author of a salacious unauthorized biography that he said damaged his reputation but the filmmaker is also seeking a public apology according to Chinese media. Zhang Yimou and actress Gong Li Documenting China - Zhang Yimou's Biography published by Huaxia and authored by Huang Xiaoyang alleges Zhang and his wife's marriage was ruined by Zhang’s indiscretions with actress Gong Li.   A court in Beijing had accepted the case last Tuesday, according to the Beijing News.
