A lot of people at the moment are immensely intrigued by Google Chrome OS. I won’t hide that I am one of them. Google promises a much needed shift in the way small computers work. Problems like software updates, backups, installation, maintenance, viruses, have plagued the world for too long: a shift is way overdue. To me, however, the change about to happen shows us what many people have refused to believe for a long time: KDE and GNOME shot...

Benchmarking the very earliest publicly-available code for Google Chrome OS seems destined to only highlight the platform’s early stage of development, especially when you throw rivals such as Moblin 2.1, Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, Fedora 12 and openSUSE 11.2 into the mixture.  Still, that’s just what Phoronix have done, and unsurprisingly the new Google netbook OS came in last position. Phoronix used a Samsung NC10 as their test mule, and...

As part of the Chromium project Google is releasing an Operating System. This is based on Linux however it is highly secured so the only applications that can run on it are web apps. Does this include Flash or Silverlight? Its meant for people who spend their time browsing the web, not writing applications. Thus it's not a challenge to Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. Cynics of course cite the analogy of the original iPhone which didn't run Apps...

Back in July, Google’s execs were grudgingly agreeing that Google Chrome OS and Android have “a great deal of commonality” and “may merge even closer.”  Now co-founder Sergey Brin has further stoked that speculation, telling reporters after last week’s Chrome OS reveal that “Android and Chrome will likely converge over time”.  Brin pointed to the common Linux and Webkit browser code as existing points of convergence in the two open-source...

Last week Google unveiled a first glimpse at Chrome OS, their web-only operating system slated for wide release in 2010. So now that you've had time to sit with the idea, we want to know what you think of it. We've seen plenty of "this will never work" press since the Chrome OS event last week, but we actually like a lot of the ideas behind Chrome OS, and if nothing else, we love seeing more variety and competition in viable consumer operating...

It's my day off, and I just finished playing with Chromium in VirtualBox. It's even worse than I thought. I wasn't kidding when I said that Chrome OS is the bare minimum required to boot your hardware and run Chrome. That's all there is. It's the Chrome web browser. Period. Have a nice day. What a joke. I hope this thing tanks. I would so much rather run Android OS on a tablet or netbook than this garbage.

Ghacks: "The very early stages of the REAL Google Chrome operating system has been released (and done so fully open sourced). It’s not an operating system you can (and should) be putting on a stand alone machine. Actually what has been released are VirtualBox and VMware images that can be booted in their respective virtual machines."
