Here are some interesting quotations from several U.S. Presidents on the Mormons that are often forgotten or never mentioned. I realize that this post isn't specifically on the American founding (usually we deal with things from the 17th and 18th centuries) but sometimes we forget just how important the 1800s were to the American founding; and the Mormon Church does have a uniquely American history. Enjoy: Martin Van Buren: Personal Correspondence with Joseph Smith. "I can do nothing for you. If I do anything, I shall come in contact with the whole state of Missouri." (Letter to Joseph and Hyrum Smith. Dec. 5, 1839, ... Read Full Story

Massachusetts Democratic Senate candidate and multimillionaire Stephen Pagliuca said Wednesday the federal capital gains tax should be raised from 15 percent to 20 percent, adding that the rich should pay an equitable share of the country's bills. A co-owner of the Boston Celtics, Pagliuca said the tax hike would not deter investment while helping to pay down the country's $1.5 trillion budget deficit and $13 trillion debt. "If you went crazy and raised the capital gains tax to 30 or 40 percent, yes, it would cut off investment. That would be a very bad thing to do. But in that (lower) range, you can ... Read Full Story

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is accusing President Barack Obama of acting too slowly to decide what U.S. policy is needed in Afghanistan. Interviewed on CBS's "The Early Show" Monday, Romney said "this Hamlet performance we're seeing out of the White House has been very disconcerting." The former Massachusetts governor said "the president has not been able to make a decision" and said that is very unfortunate. Romney said "you should get it right," but he also complained that Obama has left U.S. troops and the people of Afghanistan in doubt about American policy at a time when there also is uncertainty about ... Former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney says the time has come to stop the economic stimulus program, contending that it has not worked as the Obama administration planned. Three days after the Obama White House touted the program as creating or saving some 650,000 jobs, Romney said in a nationally broadcast interview that "the stimulus that the president and the Congress passed is not what's helped the economy." Romney said on CBS's "The Early Show" that the administration's stimulus plan "didn't work" and he said the reason things seem to be ticking up in the business world is because the "private sector" has regained its ... Monday night at the Duval County R.E.C. Lincoln Day Dinner, over 750 North East Florida Republicans gave a warm welcome to their number one 2008 Presidential primary favorite, Gov. Mitt Romney. Romney delivered an energized keynote speech downtown at the Hyatt honoring dedicated community leader, Tom Petway. Duval County R.E.C. Chairman Lenny Curry, Ambassador John Rood, State Committeewoman Cindy Graves and others should be commended for coordinating this spectacular event. Romney’s speech was principled, impassioned and conservative to the core. He spoke about the dire effects of big government spending and taxpayer funded bailouts crippling an already frail economy, versus limited government which spurs ... Read Full Story
Charlie Baker is a moderate Republican businessman who's running for Massachusetts Governor. In other words, he's got a lot in common with Mitt Romney--or at least the version of Mitt Romney who existed before he thought he needed to be a lot more conservative in order to win the GOP's presidential nomination. But today, Baker struck the sort of bold stance that not even a chameleon like Romney could distance himself from: He picked as his...

On Friday, he seemed determined to overcome that impression. In his speech, given in a room filled with more than two dozen pictures of President Ronald Reagan, Romney gave a shout-out to the tea party protesters and spoke about his new book, "No Apologies: The Case for American...
