Football's "M Jeff"
Brett Favre is becoming what Michael Jordan became at the end of his career. Being more remembered for his on and off again retirements. The newest installment of flirtation with the Minnesota Vikings has thrown me over the edge of complete disrespect for the future HOF quarterback.Growing up and living in the Chicago area my whole life I have gotten to see and hear my share of Brett Favre. He has beaten my favorite team many times all the while the Bears changed quarterbacks like I change underwear, daily. With his departure from Green Bay to New York last season I didn't see much of what was a tale of two seasons for Favre. Though I read many of the same accounts that became common knowledge of when he played here in the midwest. A sense of entitlement over all the other players on the team which eventually lead to a split locker room.
Since he has retired from the Jets it seems that he's had a plan in place to at least entertain the idea of coming back to the NFC North and the main motivation being sticking it to Ted Thompson and the Green Bay Packers. Which in itself seems a little shady. Retiring to come back to the team of your chose just isn't right. If Favre does come back I feel that the Jets should be compensated for this under handed move. What about the Packer fans that supported you for so long Brett? They loved you and were more devoted to you than any fan base, maybe in the history of the NFL. Yes, you won "ONE" championship in Green Bay, but you are revered as if you won 5 or 6 of them. I now have been questioning why, why are you so revered? Is it because of the moxy you played with? The intensity? The childlike smile that came along with all the wins? It was all of that, but somewhere that got lost and it became all about you. Coming back isn't going to hurt the Packers organization and most definitely not Ted Thompson. You will be damaging that love of those devoted fans and their faith in loyalty. Not the loyalty to the team or the fans, but to the game. That game you seemed to love so much during your "hay-days" in Green Bay. To me you now look like a "has been" that is bitter over a spate at an old place of unemployment. Most of us have been let go by a company and we all move on. Once the initial sting is over it is let go and we all move on. So why can't you?
Just like MJ refused to go quietly into the night when leaving the NBA. You are following in the same path. Unfortunately for you, your legacy is nowhere close to M Jeff and it can be, will be and is being damaged by your on and off again retirement. Your place in the top NFL quarterbacks of all time is slowly slipping out of the Top 10 and maybe further if you just don't stay away.
