A Beverly Hills house owned for two decades by Groucho Marx is on the market for $12.9 million. The one-story contemporary home was designed in 1956 by architect Wallace Neff for the comic actor and his wife, actress Eden Hartford. The 6,000-square-foot house sits on an acre and offers views of a canyon and downtown Los Angeles. In the 1930s and 1940s, Marx made a number of comic films with his brothers, including "Duck Soup," "Horse Feathers" and "A Night at the Opera." He lived in the house until his death in 1977 at the age of 86. ___ Information from: Los Angeles Times, ... Read Full Story

I read somewhere that mustaches are making a comeback. God, I hope not. I hope not because most men do not look well with upper lip hirsuteness. I don't know why that is. Shape of the face? Personality? Mustaches are like bowties (another of those cyclical fashion things) that should only bedeck the necks of certain males. Winston Churchill and Groucho Marx come to mind, along with Dagwood Bumstead. If Dagwood had worn a long tie it would have covered up that curiously huge single button in the middle of his shirt. But, back to ‘stashes. They simply do not work for most. They ... Read Full Story

S.J. Perelman at his office in Greenwich Village Date taken: October 26, 1961 Photographer: Carl Mydans From the Google Life Magazine Image Archives This morning I was listening to recent podcasts of Garrison Keillor's The Writer's Almanac on the way to work. February 1 was the birthday of comic genius S.J. Perelman, who, among other things, wrote for the Marx Brothers. The sketch of Perelman which Keillor read on his birthday was so good, I'm quoting it here in its entirety: It's the birthday of humorist S.J. Perelman, born Sidney Joseph Perelman in Brooklyn, New York (1904). His father was a Russian immigrant who ... Read Full Story

Often, it seems Memphis took Groucho Marx’s self-deprecating attitude and overlaid it on the entire city. Paraphrasing the comedian, Memphians don’t want to belong to any city that will accept them as members. It’s a lack of self-worth that plays out in local politics where big projects pass for vision and where cheap projects win out over quality ones. The poster child for this lack of ambition is The Pyramid, a bargain basement arena touted...

That’s a quote from an episode of You Bet Your Life, and it popped into my head when I saw this L.A. Times article on Jay Leno’s disastrous effect on the 11 o’clock news. Leno, who is smarter about TV than most network executives, knew this was going to be the biggest problem; he said several [...]

We are rapidly reaching the point in the debate over educational achievements in NYC, when Mike Bloomberg will be remiss not to say, quoting Groucho Marx, "Who are you going to believe, me or your own lying eyes?" Leave it to Diane Ravitch to eviscerate the fraudulent claims. Writing in edweek, Ravitch tells us:"Ultimately, we will have what I call the NCLB Paradox, wherein scores go up, but actual educational improvement does not occur. We...
