2009 Recap: Crew fans were spoiled by last season’s MLS Double when GBS led their boys to both the Supporters Shield and the MLS Cup. Of course, they don’t have much to cry about after this year either since their squad repeated as the top regular season team (which would be good enough to hoist the hardware in every other league in the world). Javier Morales and Robbie Findley scored first-half goals and Real Salt Lake advanced to its second straight conference final with a 3-2 victory over the defending MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew on Thursday night. The victory, combined with a 1-0 home win Saturday, gave Salt Lake a 4-2 aggregate win in the two-game series. Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored two second-half goals to help the Columbus Crew rally for a 2-2 tie against the Chicago Fire on Sunday. Schelotto scored the tying goal with 11 minutes to play when he converted a penalty kick, called after Fire defender Wilman Conde fouled Crew forward Steven Lenhart. Schelotto is third in MLS with 12 goals. The forward netted his first of the game in the 55th minute when he headed in a cross from midfielder Robbie Rogers. Chad Marshall scored late in the first half, William Hesmer needed to make only one save in his first match in more than two months, and the Columbus Crew beat the New York Red Bulls 1-0 on Saturday night in a rematch of the 2008 MLS Cup final. Marshall scored his second goal of the season off a corner kick by Guillermo Barros Schelotto in the 45th minute. The pair also connected in the same manner for the winning goal in the Crew's 3-1 MLS Cup victory. Hesmer missed the previous nine games with knee and back injuries. Emmanuel Ekpo, Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Eddie Gaven scored for Columbus in a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night. Schelotto's diving header in the 55th minute helped secure the victory for the defending MLS Cup champion Crew (1-2-5), who have struggled this year despite fielding a team largely comprised of the same players who won last year's title. Claudio Lopez scored for Kansas City (3-4-2) just six minutes after entering the game at halftime. Josh Wolff added a goal in the 79th minute.
