Ever wonder what people are playing? I always do, so I'm creating a portal where you can share what you play and provide personal reviews on various types of guitars and equipment.
If you live on or anywhere near the SF Bay Area Peninsula, the best music store around (IMHO) is Gelb Music in Redwood City. Gelb Music is one of the last remaining independent, full-service music stores in the area (besides Guitar Showcase in Campbell).
Lately, I've been buying a lot of my equipment there, and for several good reasons:
1. Friendly, knowledgeable, and most importantly, accessible staff. You could probably say that about any equipment shop, but the guys at Gelb not only... Read Full Story
How you sound is important, and what sounds good to you is an entirely subjective thing. A lot of guitar players want to sound like other guitarists - that's not a bad thing. Hell, I'd love to sound like Eric Johnson or Joe Satriani or Stevie Ray Vaughn myself! But whether or not you want to sound like some other guitar player, or create a sound that's unique to you, you need to take into account what shapes your overall tone. Unfortunately, many guitarists, especially inexperienced... Read Full Story
A few days ago, I got a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, and as I mentioned, I was just blown away by the sound. As I've mentioned before, there's nothing like the tube sound, and according to articles I read and people that I've spoken to about this amp, it's a great entry-level tube amp that you can a lot of mileage out of. Since I've gotten it, I've been playing it at least a couple of hours a day - it's that good! After a few days of playing it though, I started feeling that there was just... Read Full Story
After many years of using solid state amps, I finally started looking at tube amps; specifically, boutique tube amps. I've looked at and played several from folks like Dr. Z, Mesa, King Amplification and a bunch of others. But boutique amps are VERY EXPENSIVE. And upon the recommendation of a very knowledgeable acquaintaintance, I purchased a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe to tide me over until I could afford the $2500-$3500 for a boutique amp. But no matter what tube amp I decide to buy, one thing... Read Full Story

I guess I'm getting tube-happy. I was rummaging through a pile of old equipment that I have lying around, and lo and behold, I came across an old tube preamp that my brother gave me a few years ago. When he first gave it to me, I didn't really have a use for it, so I never used it. But now that I have the equipment to put it to use, I decided to give it a whirl.
First off, I took the unit apart to see what kind of tube it had. Turns out that it has a a GE JAN-5751, which is pin-out... Read Full Story
