Olympic diving champion Guo Jingjing’s return to the pool will be delayed after China withdrew from a grand prix diving event in the United States next month because of the global swine flu scare. China Sports Daily said the national diving team, which won seven of the eight gold medals at last year’s Beijing Olympics, would not take part in the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale from May 7-10. China's Swimming Association changed course on Wednesday and entered a diving team in the United States Grand Prix next week. The association originally announced on its Web site that it was withdrawing from the May 7-9 event in Fort Lauderdale, Florida because of concerns over the spread of swine flu. But USA Diving received an e-mail from the association on Wednesday that China was entering five divers, including Olympic 3-meter springboard champion Guo Jingjing. It’s always been my take that Chinese are able to do these kinds of campaigns in a more tasteful manner than their western counterparts. In any event, I’m all for there being less cancer in the world, no matter (well, almost no matter) how the prevention is promoted. Indeed, champions Olympic and otherwise are big draws to campaigns and business promotions. It’s good to know the Chinese (some) have a heart to for good, too, eh? Or is it just a PR thing?
