The bill passed by 61-36. We need to get a roll call to see which of our nation’s 36 senators voted against fair pay for women and to find out what their rationale was. They have a lot of explaining to do to their non-burqa wearing female constituents. Some of you ladies out there should expect to see a raise as your employers rush to head off any potential lawsuits. But there’s more to paycheck disparities than just discrimination: The Senate debate on Thursday reflected society’s debate... Read Full Story
by Amy Siskind It's not been a particularly good press week for two well known misogynists: Rick Warren and Larry Summers. Both men were early selections of President Obama. If we are to judge our president by whom he surrounds himself with, then what do Obama's selections of Warren and Summers tell us? That Obama's version of diversity does not include gay and women's rights. And in fact, the selection of Warren and Summers will likely be a continual source of salt on the wound of... I recently attended a Women’s Conference in Paris dedicated to the plight of women in Muslim communities throughout the world. The women's concerns addressed issues both in the home and in their respective communities. One of the highlights of the conference was the recent sentencing of a 19-year-old Saudi female victim of gang rape who initially was ordered to undergo 90 lashes for "being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape," and then shockingly sentenced to 200 lashes... Dear Ayatollah! And you were saying!! Here are some girls that have done okay!! (CNSNews.com) - Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who rules over a nation where men are allowed to have four permanent wives and as many "temporary" wives as they like, declared in a recent lecture to Iranian students that Iran honors women, while the West abuses them. The ayatollah said one indication of this is that women in Iran are forced to wear the hijab -- clothing that covers much or all of... Read Full Story
From this great site: The not-so-bitter truth “You’re just bitter.” This is a phrase commonly used to silence women . Another variation says, “You are so unforgiving.” The bitterness accusation is used to bully a woman and tell her how she “should” feel instead of asking her how she does feel. Someone who uses this label expects her to pretend there has been no harm, no foul. She is expected to pretend the one who hurt her is a great person, even if she knows he is a terrible person. If she... Read Full Story
A couple days ago I was sitting at the doctor's office getting a series of bloodwork done when I saw this: On Monday, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended that doctors delay mammography screening for breast cancer until the age of 50. The recommendation goes against the American Cancer Society’s long-held position that women receive their first mammogram by the age of 40 and follow up with yearly mammograms until the age of 74. WT#?? Are these people kidding? Yes, I admit I am... Read Full Story
This speaks for itself! From HEIDI LI'S POTPOURRI Watch the video here . Listen to The New Agenda's executive director Amy Siskind succeed as she raises pertinent, relatively mild objections, to the Ms. Magazine cover for its special inauguration issue. Then listen to Ms. Magazine's executive editor Katherine Spillar as she first a) dodges the issue, which is not whether men can be feminists, but whether there is any basis for referring to this man, President-elect Obama, as "what a feminist... If you read nothing else today, PLEASE READ DONNA DARKO This appears to be an updated post from August that begins by accounting the history of how the primaries and caucuses were used to skewer The Woman. The updates are a complete account of what women are thinking since the House betrayed them this week. The bottom line is blind trust of the third wave in Barack Obama endangers pretty much all their rights as human beings of the “Wrong” gender. This is a huge wakeup call for the Third... As an active blogger, I have a healthy respect for the power of the written word. It can change lives, change perceptions, change opinions and contribute (positively or negatively) to the collective consciousness of which we all are a part.
There is an anonymity involved in blogging, too - not so much from the blogger’s position, but from the reader’s position. While I have various ways to see who is reading what I write, I will never know for sure how many lives I’ve touched.
Blogs are... Read Full Story
