All About Knit Baby Blankets - What You Should Know If you are looking for the perfect gift for that special newborn baby, why not consider a knit baby blanket ? Handcrafted gifts have been looked at as a cheap way out for a long time. The other day after rereading my last post, I remembered that I knit a pair of socks with handspun yarn a few years ago, the yarn with similar colors to the shibori I finished last week. Here it is: This pair is 100% wool, dyed with acid dyes. And while I was shooting these, I decided to include these other handspun, handknit socks as well for your viewing pleasure... The black pair is also wool, natural black merino and hand dyed romney. The orange pair is wool and silk, also hand dyed. The last pair is alpaca and silk, and these I enjoyed making ... On Saturday, Pipsqueak and I went to the Vermont Sheep & Wool Festival in Essex Junction. I've been going for the past four years and Pipsqueak has joined me the last two. We enjoy it for the same reasons: seeing and touching the animals and touching all that soft yarn and fiber. I certainly don't go to buy anything since my stash will probably outlive me, but I go to get inspiration (which usually does result in a purchase). We started the day with a free kid workshop, which involved stuff wool roving in a grape vine ball. Roving is washed and sometimes dyed ... Read Full Story

Dye wool yarn with food coloring Filed under: kids , knitting and crochet When I was a youngster, I remember days where I was bored beyond measure. I would listen to the click-clack of my Mother's knitting needles as she would tell me stories of her youth in Germany, while I would unravel the ball of yarn for her. Most kids won't sit long enough to help with mundane tasks, but I bet you could get yours to sit still on a rainy day if you ask them to help you dye yarn with food coloring . Suse of Pea Soup has a tutorial ... Read Full Story

I’ve done a little bit before with felting. Last spring, I made a flower corsage and decorated an Easter bonnet . I was recently inspired to pick up my needle-felting tool again when I saw a demonstration using an applique mold . Making the shapes looked like loads of fun! However, I did not have any of the applique molds at my disposal. Being the innovative girl I am, I thought that maybe I could use a cookie cutter to act as the outline for my design. It doesn’t hurt to try! First, I selected a couple of cookie cutters from my supply with ... Read Full Story

For visual learners who don't know someone they can learn knitting from or who can't afford to take a class, knitting-related DVDs can be a big help. I've watched a lot of these in my time as your Guide to Knitting (and will be sharing my thoughts on some titles this week), and like knitting books, some are certainly better than others. This week I'd like to know if you've watched knitting DVDs to help you learn new skills or refresh your...

That might not be a headline you'd expect to see on this site, or anywhere else for that matter, but a group of knitters aims to change that with their calendar called, appropriately enough Knitting IS Sexy (warning: site has music). It's the brainchild of Tammy Cunningham and Laurie Maves, who said they wanted to do their part to remove the idea that knitting is just for grannies.
