The other day after rereading my last post, I remembered that I knit a pair of socks with handspun yarn a few years ago, the yarn with similar colors to the shibori I finished last week. Here it is: This pair is 100% wool, dyed with acid dyes. And while I was shooting these, I decided to include these other handspun, handknit socks as well for your viewing pleasure... The black pair is also wool, natural black merino and hand dyed romney. The orange pair is wool and silk, also hand dyed. The last pair is alpaca and silk, and these I enjoyed making ... On Saturday, Pipsqueak and I went to the Vermont Sheep & Wool Festival in Essex Junction. I've been going for the past four years and Pipsqueak has joined me the last two. We enjoy it for the same reasons: seeing and touching the animals and touching all that soft yarn and fiber. I certainly don't go to buy anything since my stash will probably outlive me, but I go to get inspiration (which usually does result in a purchase). We started the day with a free kid workshop, which involved stuff wool roving in a grape vine ball. Roving is washed and sometimes dyed ... Read Full Story

Dye wool yarn with food coloring Filed under: kids , knitting and crochet When I was a youngster, I remember days where I was bored beyond measure. I would listen to the click-clack of my Mother's knitting needles as she would tell me stories of her youth in Germany, while I would unravel the ball of yarn for her. Most kids won't sit long enough to help with mundane tasks, but I bet you could get yours to sit still on a rainy day if you ask them to help you dye yarn with food coloring . Suse of Pea Soup has a tutorial ... Read Full Story

Confessions of a Knitting Heretic by Annie Modesitt. ModeKnit Press. When many knitters are asked what knitter taught them to be more fearless about their knitting, to go their own way and figure things out on their own no matter what a pattern or knitting instructor might tell them to do, they'd probably mention Elizabeth Zimmermann as being that trailblazer for them. But I'd wager a fair number mention Annie Modesitt, too, and her book...

It is interesting that considering I’ve had way more knitting time in the past few days than I usually do, I’ve shown far less knitting on my blog. The federal government was closed today so I had another day at home. I did go out to the grocery store and post office. That was . . [...]
