Handspinning Uncarded Wool Yarn
Wool, Mohair, Llama, Alpaca, just about any animal fiber can be spun dirty and uncarded and then washed later. Simply spin the yarn fresh from the animal, wrap the yarn around a niddy-noddy to form a skein, then wash the yarn by soaking it in hot water and detergent in your kitchen sink. Be carful not to aggitate. Rinse the yarn in the same temperature as the wash water to avoid felting. Dye the yarn at this point if a different color is desired, or leave natural. Wring out excess water, blot on a towel, and hang to dry. Either let it dry natural for a curly bumpy textured yarn, or smooth it out by weighting down the yarn as it hangs. This is easily done with a milk jug of water tied to the hanging skein. Enjoy! You will be amazed at the results.
Comments
Mohair is especially wonderful if spun uncarded. Let the curls stay in the yarn and add loops as you spin for a boucle look. You can ply it with a thin spun wool or mohair yarn for added effect.
