Hank Gathers: 20th Anniversary of Basketball Player's Death

A sad reminder today of an athlete who's life ended too soon. Hank Gathers, a 6-foot-7 forward and senior at Loyola Marymount, died of sudden cardiac arrest on court.

Gathers, who led the NCAA in scoring and rebounding the season before, passed away just 12 days before the Lions were dude to enter the NCAA Tournament. The Lions managed to claw their way into the Elite 8.

"Hank is mostly remembered for the way he died, but the way he lived is really an inspiring story," said Kyle Keiderling, speaking to USA Today. Keiderling is the author of the newly released Heart of a Lion: The Life, Death and Legacy of Hank Gathers.

"He had a dream, but it cost him his life. Hank knew the risks he was taking."
