Choppers and cheese may soon become official Wisconsin symbols. Bills to honor Harley-Davidson motorcycles and Lactococcus lactis — a bacterium used in the making of cheese — with the state symbol designation were introduced in the Legislature last week. Supporters say that naming two of the state's most well-known exports as the official motorcycle and microbe will help promote the dairy and motorcycle industries in lean times. A tentative labor agreement distributed Friday to workers at Harley-Davidson's plant in south-central Pennsylvania makes it appear likely that the motorcycle maker will keep its operations there, instead of leaving the state to cut costs. A passage in the 58-page document distributed to union members and posted on the Web site of the York Daily Record includes a pledge to "discontinue current work" to relocate its largest motorcycle assembly plant to an alternate site in Kentucky. Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson would become the official Wisconsin motorcycle under a bill proposed in the Legislature. Milwaukee Democratic Rep. Leon Young says the idea came from a family member of Sgt. Jeremy Vrooman, who was killed last year while serving in Iraq.
