Hattie McDaniel: First African American Oscar Winner

Hattie McDaniel won the first-ever black performer to win an Academy Award in 1939. She played the part of Mammy in Gone with the Wind and won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. When Mo'Nique won her 2010 Oscar for the same category, she thanked Hattie and all the black women before her that helped pave the way. McDaniel was a woman of firsts.
