Volcano Art Center is celebrating 35 years of bringing visual, literary and performing arts to the people of Hawaii and visitors to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The center will hold a birthday open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 27 at its Niaulani campus in Volcano Village.

The U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory took this picture of advancing lava on the Kalapana access road in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Sunday. Civil defense officials think the trailhead of the Kalapana viewing area is safe from a tongue of lava from the Kilauea volcano.
