Wear Red For Your Heart

wearingredHeart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 killer of American women, claiming the lives of more than 450,000 American women each year. Over the last 25 years, the death rate for heart disease in men has declined steadily (by more than 17%), while the death rate for women has declined by only 2.5%, resulting in a disparity in heart disease mortality in women compared to men.

This statistic is a sobering one and indicates there is much more to be done for preventing heart disease in women around the world. This Friday, February 6, be a part of National Wear Red Day and wear red to show your support for efforts to combat heart disease and join thousands of other women like the celebrities pictured to call attention to this growing problem.

There’s more that you can do:

  • Send an automatic letter to your Member of Congress to build support for the HEART for Women Act.  Check out a sample letter and more information from the American Heart Association here.
  • Check out the Heart Truth Campaign and read more about the National Wear Red campaign and how you can get involved

So, bust out your sexy red dress or bundle up in a bright red sweater and make both a fashion statement and send a message of awareness about heart disease.
