Aus Will Power captures first Indy title
Australian Will Power beat Penske teammate Helio Castroneves to capture the Edmonton Indy race and post his first IndyCar Series victory.
Power, of Toowoomba, dominated the race starting on the pole and leading 90 of 95 laps on the Edmonton City Centre Airport track.
"It caps a perfect weekend," said Power. "I am really enjoying being a part of Penske racing. I am not stressed. I am just taking it one race at a time and doing my best."
He had a one-second lead over Brazil's Castroneves before the race was stopped under caution for an incident involving Tomas Scheckter with less than two laps to go.
Castroneves' second place finish gave Penske a one-two finish for the second time this season.
Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon, of New Zealand, placed third, Ryan Briscoe was fourth while Dario Franchitti rounded out the top five.
"It's definitely a tough circuit and it gets a lot tougher when you don't have the best car," Dixon said. "We were definitely hanging on. We seemed to be pretty good for about half the stint on the Firestone tires, but we just abused them too much.
"After that, it was just so slippery I just had to hang on. We gained some valuable points."
Paul Tracy, Graham Rahal, Justin Wilson, Robert Doornbos and Marco Andretti were sixth through 10th. Danica Patrick finished 11th.
The next race is August 1 at Kentucky Speedway.
