A community portal about Hepatitis B with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Hepatitis B is a disease of the liver caused by the Hepatitis B virus, a member of the Hepadnavirus family and one of several unrelated viral species which cause viral hepatitis. It was originally known as "serum hepatitis" and has caused current epidemics in parts of Asia and Africa. Hepatitis B is recognized as endemic in China and various other parts of Asia. The proportion of the world's population currently infected with the virus is 3 to 6%, but up to a third have been exposed. Symptoms of the acute illness caused by the virus include liver inflammation, vomiting, jaundice, and rarely, death. Chronic hepatitis B may cause liver cirrhosis which may then lead to liver cancer. The hepatitis B virus is the second most prevalent cause of cancer in humans after Tobacco smoke.
There are many different types of hepatitis. These viral infections of the liver can be very damaging and in some cases can be fatal. One type of hepatitis that is preventable is Hepatitis B. While it is very contagious under certain circumstances, it can be prevented with the right precautions. Are you at risk for Hepatitis B infection? The Hepatitis B fact sheet will help answer that question.

In patients with chronic hepatitis C, treatment with peginterferon alpha-2a (PegIFNα2a) plus ribavirin (RBV) better suppresses the virus to undetectable levels in the blood than treatment with peginterferon alpha-2b (PegIFNα2b) plus RBV, according to two new head-to-head studies in Gastroenterology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute. Patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection are...
Researchers have identified two cellular proteins that are important factors in hepatitis C virus infection, a finding that may result in the approval of new and less toxic treatments for the disease, which can lead to liver cancer and cirrhosis. An estimated 270 to 300 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis C and the conventional treatments - interferon and ribavirin - can have significant side effects...
( from http://www.rxpgnews.com ) Researchers from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) determined that patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) who consumed more than 308 mg of caffeine daily had milder liver fibrosis. The daily amount of caffeine intake found to be beneficial is equivalent to 2.25 cups of regular coffee. Other sources of caffeine beyond coffee did not have the same therapeutic...
Long-time readers know this is a topic that always annoyed me (to put it mildly) - the treatment of hepatitis B carriers as lepers, banning them from certain types of jobs and needlessly stigmatizing them.

This study focuses on detecting and managing antiviral drug resistance in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection. Expert Review of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Background:
Identical blood samples tested using different kits can give markedly different hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA levels, which can cause difficulty in the interpretation of viral load. A universal double-stranded DNA control or standard that can be used in all commercial HBV DNA nucleic acid amplification assay kits is urgently needed. By aligning all HBV genotypes (A-H), we found that the surface antigen gene and precore-core gene...

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - San Francisco Hep B Free is partnering with Walgreens to encourage all clinicians citywide to routinely screen their patients for hepatitis B. Beginning Dec. 7, Walgreens will distribute 100,000 informational hepatitis B fliers at more than 60 pharmacy locations throughout the city.

Scientists in China are reporting discovery of unusual liver proteins, found only in males, that may help explain the long-standing mystery of why the hepatitis B virus (HBV) sexually discriminates -- hitting men harder than women. Their study has been published online in ACS' Journal of Proteome Research, a monthly publication.
Background:
Liver cancer is one of most commonly diagnosed cancers among Koreans. Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major risk factor for liver cancer. HBV infection can be prevented by effective screening and vaccination programs. The purpose of this study is to examine the status of HBV infection and the predictors associated with HBV vaccination.

The study population was derived from the 2005 Korea National Cancer...

Villanova freshman forward Mouphtaou Yarou (Natitingou, Benin/Montrose Christian School) has tested positive for the Hepatitis B virus, the school announced today in a press release. Yarou is being treated under the supervision of team physician Dr. Frank Furman. There is presently no timetable for his return to game action.
Despite its tiny genome, the hepatitis C virus packs a mean punch. The virus is a microcosm of efficiency, and each of its amino acids plays multiple roles in its survival and ability to sidestep attack. But new research suggests that this fancy footwork and multitasking could be the key to bringing down the virus. The work, which focuses on a once-ignored protein, provides insights on how drug therapy for sufferers of the disease might be...
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection who are hepatitis B e antigen-positive, viral genotype is one of the strongest predictors of a sustained response to pegylated interferon-alfa (PEG-IFN), investigators report.

Dynavax Technologies Corp. (DVAX) announced recently that it has received approval from the European Union to make part of its hepatitis B vaccine (HBV) Heplisav at a German factory. The EU approval permits Dynavax to commercially produce hepatitis B surface antigen, a key component of Heplisav at the factory in Düsseldorf, in the west central part of Germany.Rhein Biotech, a German unit of Dynavax, has used this facility...
