How Can We Define High Blood Pressure?

An all too common problem with high blood pressure these days is that it is so common and so often talked about that most people do not afford it the respect it deserves. The fact is high blood pressure, or hypertension, is a killer and needs to be treated as such.

Many hundreds of doctors, scientist and researchers have spent a great deal of money and time trying to describe just what the true definition of high blood pressure is.

Over the years there have been many studies performed on this subject which have given the doctors, scientist and researchers a wide range of blood pressure values. The results however are normally skewed and vary from one country to the next and even from district to district within a given country. Therefore, it has been concluded that the definition of high blood pressure can only be arrived at through constant observation and experiment.

Normal blood pressure is seen in a similar way to normal body weight in the sense that the level used for its definition is that which is seen as providing the greatest projected life expectancy. In other words, this is the level at which the heart together with other important parts of the body such as the circulatory system can operate under optimum conditions without running the risk of heart disease and related conditions.

There are other considerations which have to be taken into account when defining high blood pressure and some have to be excluded. For example, If a healthy person becomes then their systolic (or pumping) blood pressure can be expected to rise by perhaps a significant amount as their blood flow rises in response to extreme emotional excitement or energetic exercise. However it will not stay high for long and as soon as the level of excitement has gone down your blood pressure also falls back to normal.

In addition to a systolic (pumping) pressure you also have a diastolic (resting) pressure which is the more important and is an excellent guide in determining whether a high reading is a false positive. The reason why the diastolic pressure is important is because it points to the state of an individual's arteries and if a person has a high reading this may show that your arteries are restricted and not allowing the free flow of blood.

It is important to understand that high blood pressure is not in itself a disease but is a key criterion used by doctors to diagnose or predict other conditions.

Lastly, it is also necessary to understand that high blood pressure cannot be cured although it can be very well controlled with the right treatment.
