The Benefits Of Having A Fireplace

For many people searching for a home, a fireplace is one of the items that they put on the top of their desired list. Adding one to a home can also be a smart investment, not only do they look good, but also when going to resell a home it can certainly be an added attraction.

The Purpose

Initially, a fireplace was the center of a home for several reasons. It is not hard to picture the practical aspects of a fireplace that include heating the home and being able to cook. As time went on, and other ways to heat and cook food were created, the fireplace then took on the purpose of ornamental value.

The ornamental value included dressing up a room with spectacular mantels and stonework and having a cozy place for company to relax by. For many homes, a fireplace was an added extra but not really seen as energy efficient to heat a home.

Today that view has changed. Not only can it be a beautiful centerpiece to a home it can also be created to help heat a home, so many companies are finding ways to increase the energy efficiency of fireplaces.

Tips For Energy Efficiency

When looking at homes with fireplaces, or deciding to add one to your home, look into ways to make it pay for itself. There are several ideas that can help consumers create not only a lovely hearth, but also one that can assist in heating the home.

One tip when looking into a fireplace is getting glass doors. Many of the glass doors that are manufactured today are made to keep the heat in, even after the fire has long gone out. Getting a fan that can then blow the heat into the room is a great idea in moving that heat around and keeping an area warm. Make sure the chimney is insulated, so that you are not loosing heat.

Some fireplaces are free standing and do not need to be built into a home. These freestanding woodstoves are extremely energy efficient and are built to heat up. Check with companies that make this type of woodstoves in order to determine where in a home they can safely be placed, and what needs to be done to vent them.

A fireplace is an investment that is worth the time to check into. There are many ideas that can be used in all kinds of homes in regards to making and keeping them useful.
