Types Of Alcohol: Ale
Welcome back! Today I’m going to be continuing the series I started earlier this week. If you’ll remember, last article was about beer. Today, I’m going to write about another alcoholic beverage in the beer family. Today’s alcohol beverage is Ale.
Ale, like Beer, is brewed from malted barley, yeast, and hops. The main difference is that the yeast is a different type. The yeast is called top-fermenting yeast, and it converts starches to sugars at a much quicker rate. This gives the ale a sweet, almost fruity taste. Hops are added to the Ale to give it a slight bitter taste. This counters the sweeter taste so that the end result is as close to perfect as possible. Most Ale’s take about three weeks to go through the brewing/fermenting process. Usually, Ale takes less time to brew than beer, and is sweeter.
There are records of Ale existing in the 15th century. Ale was a crucial beverage in medieval times, and the majority of peasants drank it by the gallon. Now, in modern times, ale is categorized by the temperature of fermentation, and the type of yeast used. Ale is usually fermented between 60-75 degrees F (14-24 C). At this temperature, the yeast releases flavors that add to Ale’s fruity taste.
There are several different types of ale. A few of these are Pale Ale, Porter, Red Ale, Brown Ale, Old, Scotch, and Mild. The main difference between all of these is the type of ingredients, and a variation of Alcohol percentage. In pale ale, lighter barley is used. This creates the lighter color, and also a lighter taste. Red Ale uses roasted barley, giving it a particular red hue. Brown ales use regular barley, they have a lower amount of hops, and tend to have a mild flavor. A stronger type of Ale is Scotch. Sometimes, it is caramelized to give it flavor. Old Ale is Ale that has been stored for longer than a year. This gives it a much stronger flavor. Finally, Mild Ale is the opposite of Old Ale. It’s often drank as soon as possible after the brewing process. It also contains less alcohol. There are a few other varieties of Ale, but they are less common, so I won’t be addressing them.
In conclusion, Ale, as an alcoholic beverage, is a lot like Beer, but has a sweeter, fruitier flavor. This is because of the temperature during fermentation and the type of yeast. There are many different types of Ale, and everyone has a different preference. I hope you learned a lot from this article, and will continue reading. There are still plenty of beverages containing alcohol that I haven’t covered yet, so stay tuned! Thanks for reading this article on alchohol!
