Have you thought about homeschooling, but aren't sure how to get started? Guess what? I'm going to write a series on how you can get started homeschooling. This is just an introduction. When I started homeschooling, I thought I had done all the research I needed to do...it turned out that I hadn't, and I'm paying the price for it now. I hope to save some of you the troubles that I have gone through, by providing you with all the information I can on how to get started with homeschooling. Here are the articles I will be including in this series: Why Should ... Read Full Story

So, today I was looking for worksheets on taxonomy...activities to get it stuck in Kia's head. I found this great biology site that has SO much more that you have GOT to check out!! Biology Corner has everything you could possibly want to teach your child biology. This is an amazing biology resource. To see their "old" biology worksheets, click here . These are where I found the great nuggets of biology worksheets! That section has biology worksheets on many different topics, including anatomy, evolution, taxonomy, cell parts, ecology and more. I can't even describe all of the worksheets that Biology Corner has. You ... Read Full Story

Peter and the Wolf is an absolutely awesome way to introduce small children to music, symphonies and classical instruments. I used it for Dakota and Amber. The others listened in, but only because it was on. However, the other kids liked listening for the different instruments on Peter and the Wolf, and associating the instruments with the Peter and the Wolf characters. Each character in the story Peter and the Wolf is represented by a different musical instrument. For example, the bird is represented by the piccolo, Peter is represented by the clarinet and Peter's grandfather is represented by the bassoon. Parents can easily ... Read Full Story

It just occurred to me. I have had many, many negative reactions to my decision to homeschool...and yet, all of the concerns that would come to MY mind when considering my childrens' education are not included in these objections. What qualifications do I have? How can I teach advanced subjects if I have no knowledge of these subjects? How will my children do lab sciences without access to an expensive laboratory? Sadly, I don't get any of these objections. Nope, no one in my family is interested or worried about the quality of my childrens' education. None of my friends are worried about them ... I just finished reading a comment from a reader who notes: I do not believe that homeschooling these [autistic] children is the best option as they need interaction with other children to aid their development. I simply had to respond. Those of us who homeschool their children - with or without autism - are accustomed to hearing others complain that homeschooling is isolating and therefore harmful to the child.  But we homeschoolers know...

I'm on a 12 day trip with my parents visiting relatives from Texas to Tennessee so I've spent a lot of time with them in the recent days. The other night, my dad said that he felt that my grandkids (his great grandkids) have a better chance of turning out okay since they're being homeschooled. I was floored when he said that. He has never verbally supported homeschooling in all the years I was homeschooling my children. But over the years, he...

In her latest column, Rep. Cynthia Davis, R-O"Fallon, offers her views on education, which mainly amount to the idea that taxpayers should foot the bill for private school education and homeschooling since parents who opt for those choices are thinking more about their children's education anyway. The column is printed below:Last week was the 50th anniversary celebration of Citizens for Educational Freedom (CEF). This was so important because...

When a mother at church asked me about homeschooling our six children and I mentioned our involvement in a co-op, she said, "That sounds good, but it doesn't sound like true homeschooling to me." So, who is a "true" homeschooler? A recent Wall Street Journal article referenced a 2007 statistic by the National Center for Education Statistics where online schoolers were included among the 1.5 million children who were homeschooled. But some...
