Carleton S. Fiorina is in it to win it . The “it” the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard seeks is a US Senate seat from California. Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer has held the seat for three terms and is furiously raising money for re-election next year. Carly Fiorina made it official this month that she is a candidate for the Republican nomination to oppose Boxer. Her celebrity and wealth may not guarantee that she’ll get the nod, however. She faces Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, an Orange County Republican, in next year’s primary, and that will be her first test in electoral politics. Fiorina isn’t the only ex-CEO of ... Read Full Story

In the 1950s, RCA first found the infrared radiation of gallium arsenide in other semiconductor alloys. LED is a luminescence component made of semiconductor materials. The component has two electrode terminals. Voltage is applied between the terminals and electricity is switched on. And after the combination of electricity and hole, the remaining power is released in form of light. Different materials have different wavelengths and thus send out lights of various colors. This is the basic lighting theory of LED. LED can only be applied in diodes that can send out visible light. The diodes that send out near-infrared radiation are called IRED. The ... Read Full Story

It’s been a week of big headlines in the technology field. The biggest story was the legal settlement reached between Advanced Micro Devices and Intel . These processor archrivals agreed to wrap up their legal disputes on business practices and patent issues, with Intel paying $1.25 billion to AMD. While Intel was spared further expense in an antitrust lawsuit that was scheduled to go to trial next year, its troubles over alleged anticompetitive behavior are not fully resolved . The company is appealing the fine of more than 1 billion euros imposed earlier this year by the European Commission, responding to complaints by ... Read Full Story

The recession, at least in the US, apparently is at an end , after nearly two years. One promising sign is the uptick in business for semiconductor production equipment, as reported by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), an industry trade group which tracks the orders and shipments reported to the organization by North American equipment suppliers. Equipment industry conditions bottomed out in the first quarter of this year, according to SEMI. The organization’s monthly book-to-bill report follows how orders (bookings) are corresponding to shipments (billings). A ratio of 1.0 indicates orders and shipments are in balance and the North American equipment industry is ... Read Full Story

I've been following the fate of the Fontainebleau Las Vegas casino resort for a while now. It looks like the stalled project may have a new savior in the form of billionaire investor Carl Icahn. Icahn's Icahn Nevada Gaming LLC will be the opening or 'stalking horse' bidder in an auction of the resort after Penn National Gaming Inc. dropped out. Bloomberg News reports on the bidding war in court which led to Icahn offering $105 million, plus...
