Sun Feb 15th 2009 Two baseball sources told ESPN.com early Saturday that the Atlanta Braves are making a late play for Griffey and have begun discussing money with his agent. "We have interest in several available outfielders, including Griffey," Braves general manager Frank Wren told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution later Saturday. Atlanta, which has been looking for a reasonably priced, veteran outfield bat, lost out to the Los Angeles Angels this week in a bid to sign Bobby Abreu. If the...Read Full Story
Horacio Ramirez was traded by the Braves last December to the Mariners for pitcher Rafael Soriano . At the time, many wondered why the Mariners would accept such a trade because Soriano is regarded as one of the best late inning relievers in the game. He is just twenty-seven, and was able to hold an ERA under three while he was in the AL. So jumping leagues would probably be even easier for Ramirez, joining a team with solid defense and a favorable ballpark. Ramirez showed promise as a...Read Full Story
The Atlanta Braves cut ties with future Hall of Famer Tom Glavine, releasing him just a day after throwing six scoreless innings in a rehab start. Glavine, who is recovering from minor elbow surgery, was clocked between 83-86 mph on his fastball. "I don't know what else I can do," Glavine said after Tuesday night's game, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Physically I felt good and I feel like I'm ready." Glavine is still a couple week away from returning, and it is possible he...Read Full Story
The AJC is still reporting about the one that got away. Rafael Furcal's agents the Wasserman Group dumped us like a bad date, and now the Braves are not going to let it happen again. Guru of deal making, John Schuerholz had this to say in the AJC : Having been in this business for 40-some years, I’ve never seen anybody treated like that,” Schuerholz said. “The Atlanta Braves will no longer do business with that company — ever. John Smoltz doesn't have as many career victories as Kenny Rogers, Joe Niekro or Rick Reuschel. He doesn't have as many saves as Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams, Roger "The Second Spitter" McDowell or former Clemson fireballer Billy Koch.
Bobby Cox is coming out of retirement. For one night, anyway. The future Hall of Fame manager is planning to manage a team of Braves prospects against the major league club in an exhibition on April 3, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
The back of a John Smoltz baseball card looks like a database on the fritz. “Nobody really understands,” the former Atlanta Braves pitcher said by phone from his Alpharetta, Ga., home when asked about the unique difficulty of transitioning mid-career from starter to reliever and back again to starter. “It really was very difficult,” Smoltz said. “I had to learn about being a closer on the job.” ...Smoltz says the Hall of Fame is no big deal...
