Horror Movies From 1970s-early 1990s Scare More

From Jaws and The Shining to The Exorcist, Halloween and even Exorcist III, in my opinion horror movies from these time periods are the best. What I love most about these movies is that they rely on true techniques of the horror genre to scare audiences and not computer generated special effects, gore or cheap shocks. Today, there are so many horror movies out there it is tough to find the good ones. Many of them use computers to create unrealistic or sometimes over-the-top effects. Also, many movies simply startle audiences with shock scenes in which something merely jump into the picture unexpectedly to scare audiences. And then there is the gore. Most horror films today are simply gory and bloody to substitute for real frights and that is just cheating because I want to be scared, not grossed out. I have to give props to the Amityville Horror remake from 2005 for staying true to the effective techniques used by directors from the era of the original.
Those movies from the 70s, 80s and even early 90s (at least most of them) have a certain quality about them. They stick to the basics and it really pays off. They explore the art of horror films from eerie silences and use of shadows to subtle cues that let the audience know something is terribly wrong or something frightening is going to happen.
Anyone interested in seeing what I am talking about should check out the movies listed above and any others as suggested by many popular websites. The Exorcist III, I found to be an excellent horror film, moreso than even the first one. But either way, these films hold true to utilizing perfected techniques to really scaring audiences to their cores.
Alfred Hitchcock once said (and I'm probably butchering the quote so I'll paraphrase), "It isn't the final 'bang' that scares the audiences, it's everything leading up to the 'bang'." If people really want to be scared on a stormy night in front of the TV, try one of the classics and you might be surprised.
