Bangkok Hostels & Guest Houses - Where to Find and Stay

Today hostels in Bangkok aren't just for backpackers with dreadlocks. You'll find many middle aged to retired folks mixed among faces of college students in any hostel in Bangkok. You'll also notice many of Bangkok's hostels have a hip trendy look and not the austere hospital environment you might see elsewhere.

The first place to seek a hostel in Bangkok is where the backpacker community gravitates to, Khao San Road. This short 3 block street is filled with shops catering to tourist on a budget. You'll find many food carts with cheap tasty Thai food and even a hair stylist who can braid your dreadlocks. One of the most popular hostels is at the entrance of Khao San Road called Shambara Boutique Hostel. It has a very cozy atmosphere, kind of as if you were staying with family. There's even a nice little restaurant to enjoy some homemade Thai delicacy.

Khao San Road is a bit far off from the major hub of activity in Bangkok. So if you'd like you can choose to stay in hostels found throughout the neighborhoods of Silom and Sukhumvit. Those two areas are in the heart of Bangkok's nightlife districts and shopping Mecca.

In Silom you should definitely check out Lub d Bangkok. It's a really hip and trendy hostel that doesn't really look like one at all. Matter of fact it looks just like any other hotel save for the backpack wearing students. Lub d is close to BTS Sky Train, a very convenient way to zip around the commercial zones of Bangkok.

If you're interested in staying in the slightly pricier Sukhumvit neighborhood there's a hostel very close to Thong Lo district called HI Sukhumvit, a really cool place to stay and save money. There's also a BTS Sky Train nearby so you can get around easily as well.

One thing you have to know about hostels in Bangkok is that many offer different room configurations such as private rooms or dorms for men or women. And some properties are very small so have a limited amount of rooms and bed. So it's good idea to reserve your beds in advance.
