According to a patent dug up by Siliconera, Sony have found a way to emulate the running of PlayStation 2 games on the PS3 with the use of a software-only solution, as opposed to the hardware solution in the early PS3s that went on sale in North America and Japan at launch.
Currently, if you buy a PS3 from the store, that machine will not be able to play PS2 games, after Sony pulled the hardware necessary to run those games following concerns...

@Fuji-kun: if i remember correctly, they downloaded a system update on their bc ps3. owner then "upgraded" to a non-bc model, then re-downloaded the update through their download history on psn. according to the owner, they were then able to play at least some ps2 titles on their "non-bc" ps3.
if someone could make that update available for wide download i'd be tempted to try it- donated my ps2 to my daughter last year and my games are now...
