I was reading an article in the Arizona Republic newspaper today about a website called www.freerice.com and found it to be amazing. This wonderful organization developed a word based vocabulary game that is brilliantly simple, just match a word to its meaning (over 10,000+ words in the database at this time) and every correct answer they will score 20 grains of rice. My siblings and I grew up in relative poverty. We often moved with our parents to various migrant camps and housing so they could pick whatever vegetable or fruit was ready for harvesting. We lived in places that had outhouses and no indoor plumbing, and others that were miles from the nearest city. It would be easy for me to romanticize this period of my life, but it was not romantic. Bangkok’s Siam Square witnessed an explosive launch of ActionAid’s HungerFREE campaign on Saturday, June 30th. Top Thai hip-hop, pop and rock bands joined up-coming student bands playing to 2000 of Bangkok’s youth in the HungerFREE Planet concert. As well as live music, HungerFREE Planet featured video projections, games and a ‘take action’ booth where concert-goers could send a message to governments to act on hunger.
