This weekend, as we watch and hope that Hurricane Irene does not do a lot of damage up and down the East Coast of the United States, I start thinking of the hurricane names for this year. The National Hurricane Center upgraded one tropical depression in the Atlantic Ocean to Tropical Storm Earl on Wednesday. Experts at the Center predict that the new storm could reach hurricane status as early as Friday. Tropical Storm Earl currently packs winds of up to 40 miles per hour, but no coastal warnings have yet been issued. Tropical Storm Fay . We may or may not get hit by Tropical Storm Fay. Current forecasts call for it to drift up the western coastline of Florida before crossing over the panhandle into Georgia. A friend of mine, Dade Brantley, just posted video of what Tropical Storm Fay looked like over on Saint Simons Island. I go over there a lot and it was eye opening to see the flooding. Imagine what it would look like if a Tropical Storm or Class One Hurricane made landfall. The seven minute piece opens with him driving over the causeway to the island. This morning Tropical Storm Fay is inland, about 30 miles east of Ft. Myers, 45 miles east of Pine Island. We're having some blustery winds (about 30 mph) and scattered bands of rain. Lots of hurricane prep was done yesterday, but there appear to be no consequences from the storm, not even branches down. Tropical Storms are often the equivalent of "snow days" up north, a chance to take a day off from normal responsibilities, maybe we'll go bowling or to a movie!
